Double Sided Tape

Double Sided Tape

Double sided tape is used to bond two surfaces together. It is pressure-sensitive (just like masking tape and clear tape), but is coated with adhesive on both sides. Especially useful in offices and schools, double sided tape is also very important in gift wrapping and other everyday projects. It can be a substitute for clear tape and glue, and is one of the most versatile adhesives for scrap booking and mounting.

Types of Double Sided Tape

Did you know that special types of double sided tape exist? There’s the so called ‘lingerie’ or 'cloth' double sided tape, which is used for securing cloth to the skin to prevent wardrobe malfunctions and keep strapless or loose clothing in place. Carpet installers also use this tape to secure the carpet on floor temporarily, while measurements are being done.

Another special double sided tape is the low-acid type, which is useful for bonding fabric and other delicate construction applications.

Double sided duct tape is also available for home repair and construction purposes, and are especially useful for keeping plastic sheeting in place.

For laminating, splicing, mounting, and bonding, film and paper double coated tape is the most suitable type. However, if you need adhesives for window glazing and mounting hooks, signs, soap dispensers, and mirrors, PVC foam and polyethylene double sided tape is recommended.

If you need a stronger and permanent adhesive to curved or irregular surfaces, VHB/UHB (very high bond or ultra high bond) double coated tape is better than solid acrylics.

Transfer and ATG tapes, meanwhile, are excellent for crafts and projects like scrap booking, photo mounting, and picture framing. You can choose from two sub-types: (1) dimensional and (2) thin. Thin is good if you want that ‘invisible’ effect, as when you are gift wrapping. The much-thicker dimensional double sided tape is excellent for making objects stand out and achieving that 3D effect.

The most commonly used double sided tape in offices is the tissue tape, which is easy to rip. It is made by applying adhesive to both sides of a tissue paper. Siliconed paper is then applied to one side to keep the tape from sticking to itself. Double sided tape is commonly produced in log form, but some manufacturers sell it in strips (especially dimensional types).
