A crucial personal protective and safety equipment, protective clothing is necessary to protect your body from potential injury that may be caused by infection, chemicals, heat, electrical hazards, and blunt impacts. It is necessary for occupational safety and health reasons, but the term is also broadly used for other purposes like martial arts, sports, combat, sun protection, and others.

Types of Protective Clothing

One of the types of protective clothing available for professionals is the vapour protective suit, which is worn with chemical-resistant boots and gloves, and a full-face self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) mask. Its main purpose is to protect your respiratory system, skin, and eyes from chemicals. Special cases may require you to wear outer gloves and a hard hat.

Extra protection for your respiratory system is provided by liquid-splash protective suits. It consists of pressurised full-face mask similar to the vapour protective suit, chemical-resistant boots and gloves, a hard hat, and 2-way radios. Protective safety equipment like outer gloves and a cooling system may be worn with a liquid splash suit. While it offers complete respiratory protection, it cannot protect against vapours or gas, making it more suitable for chemicals that are known to be less harmful to the skin. An alternative to this is the support function protective garments, which offers protection for the respiratory system but offers less protection for the skin. It cannot guard against vapour or gas chemicals either, so it is only useful when chemicals are less hazardous to the skin. This protective clothing is not suitable for chemical emergency responses.

For situations with no known hazards, coveralls are recommended. They come with safety glasses, safety footwear, and ear protection. You can wear a SCBA mask, or additional gloves, too. However, it offers no skin or respiratory protection. Situations involving hot zones and chemical emergency responses should be avoided when wearing coveralls.
